Knowledge Discovery in Database (KDD)

In many cases, IT people consider Knowledge Discovery in Database as identical to Data Mining. Here we regard it is rather process-oriented than Data Mining is. KDD consists of steps in discovering knowledge that lying in the database. Seven steps in KDD are:

Goal Identification
Create Target Data
Data Preprocessing
Data Transformation
Data Mining
Interpretation and Evaluation
Taking action

Some sources may have different steps to this but they are conceptually the same.

Implementing KDD enables practitioner to find out possible knowledge that has never been revealed before. Companies who implement KDD may use knowledge obtained to be an advantage to win over their competitors who still have their database quietly kept down there.
